Adhesive Tags

Never put adhesive stickers like name tags on leather or suede clothing as glue will permanently mark its surface.

Storing Your Garment

Never store leather or suede in plastic. These natural materials need to breathe and should be kept in a cool, dry area away from direct heat.

To remove everyday dirt from smooth leathers, periodically wipe them with a water-dampened cloth.

Solvents

Never treat leather with powerful solvents such as acetone, benzine, or nail varnish remover.

Sensitivity to light

Leather can be sensitive to light and leather garments should therefore be protected from intensive light and sunshine.

Damp or wet leather garments Hang on a clothes hanger and dry at normal room temperature. Leather garments should always be dried at a low temperature and never in proximity to sunlight or radiators.

Storage

Leather needs to breathe, therefore it should be stored dry and well aired. Do not store leather garments in plastic bags.

Ironing

Leather can be ironed. It should be ironed on the inside with a cloth at wool temperature (ca. 150 °C).

In the beginning there was skin!

The origins of the word "leather" are to be found in proto-Germanic. It means an animal hide which has been rendered durable.

The making of hides and furs into leather is one of the oldest human skills. From the very beginning of human history the main purpose for which leather was used was to make clothing.

Because untreated hides and furs rotted quickly under wet conditions and broke easily under dry conditions early man had to render them durable through the use of suitable tanning substances. Some of the earliest methods of tanning used were, for example, the conservation of the leather by smoking it, chewing the hides (the Eskimo method), the use of various types of fat including the addition of various extracts from tree bark together with water. In the 19th century these tanning techniques were further improved. It was only through the development of special synthetic and natural tanning extracts at the beginning of the 20th century that further progress was achieved and products developed whose quality and suitability were comparable to today's standards.

Leather is alive!

Natural leather is inimitable in its qualities and unique in its appearance.

All tanned animal hides, even hides of the same animal race, are unique in their composition, in the way they react to processing, in their appearance and their wearing qualities. This is a considerable difference to all materials created out of a test tube. Each piece of leather clothing is a genuine natural product and therefore a unique object of real character.

Real leather has several positive qualities. Leather is able to breathe but it is also windproof. Leather absorbs the natural moisture of the body easily and releases it again when aired properly. When subjected to light stress leather gives way but under heavy stress leather shows its strength. Leather is elastic and adapts perfectly to the physical movements of the wearer. Leather does not tear and has a long life. Depending on the tanning process used leather is soft, smooth, and supple. Real leather has wearing qualities which synthetic materials can only imitate with great difficulty.

Whoever wears leather is clothed naturally. People who wear leather also display a feeling for fashionable trends and thus surround themselves with an air of luxury, a luxury which today is within the reach of almost everybody.

Leather is nature!

Throughout the world the leather industry can choose from the hides of very many different animals. Today, however, the hides and furs used come almost exclusively from animals slaughtered for food.

Jack Edwards Leatherwear chooses only the best of these hides as the raw material for its high-quality collections. The leather used in Jack Edwards Leatherwear products is generally from sheep and lamb skins.
